Being Supergirl (Rev. 0.1)
FADE IN:
INT. ROOM - DAY
Supergirl stands in front of an empty background, looking
straight at the camera.
SUPERGIRL
So, you wanna know about me, eh?
You wanna know who I am. What I
like and what I hate about being
me. What makes me tick, so to
speak. Well, you'll find out.
(beat)
First off, my name is Kara Zor-el,
but -- as I'm sure you guessed --
everyone calls me Supergirl. Cool
outfit, eh? NEVER call it a
costume. Anyway, I was born on
Krypton -- yeah, like Superman.
He's my cousin. My LITTLE cousin.
I'm older than he is. Wouldn't have
guessed that, would you? But it's
true. In fact, back in Krypton, I
was his babysitter.
(smiling, gets closer to
camera)
Yeah, I changed Superman's diapers.
(chuckles)
Wanna see a big man blush? Tell him
that one. I do. All the time.
Seriously. Specially when he gets
bossy or overprotective. I go like
--
(turns to imaginary
Superman)
You were so much nicer when you
were a baby. I remember we used to
have so much fun together whenever
I changed your diapers. You'd smile
at me and I'd tickle your little...
eh, toes, and you'd giggle for a
whole minute...
Supergirl chuckles.
SUPERGIRL
He hates it when I do that. Flash
loves it, though. He asks me to do
it all the time. Specially in front
of Batman for some reason.
(chuckles)
But enough about him. This is about
me. So... well... I think I should
start with my super-powers. You'd
love that, wouldn't you? Well, I
can fly --
INSERT VARIOUS SHOTS of Supergirl flying.
SUPERGIRL
Flying is so cool. The feeling of
freedom is unbelievable. I also
have super-strength. That's your
favorite, isn't it? Mine too.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl lifting a tank.
SUPERGIRL
It's so incredible cool to be able
to lift really heavy stuff.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl lifting a giant robot.
SUPERGIRL
And it's not just lifting stuff. I
get to do lots of punching too.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl punching an enemy and sending it
flying into a wall.
SUPERGIRL
And kicking too.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl doing a round-house kick and
smashing a steel door.
SUPERGIRL
I like to think I'm a pretty good
fighter. I can take care of myself.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl fighting with three robots and
looking stunning.
SUPERGIRL
I can stand my ground against
anyone. Yes, even Superman.
(smiles, beat)
Okay, but enough about strength, I
have other powers too. I have heat
vision.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl splitting a tank in two with her
heat vision.
SUPERGIRL
I have X-ray vision too.
INSERT SHOT of X-Ray vision at work.
SUPERGIRL
And super-breath.
INSERT SHOT of super-breath at work.
SUPERGIRL
I'm also invulnerable.
INSERT SHOT of two guys with huge machine guns firing at a
nonchalant Supergirl. Bullets fly everywhere.
SUPERGIRL
Really, I am.
INSERT SHOT of gargantuan man smashing Supergirl in the abs
with a huge hammer. She doesn't feel a thing. She looks at
the hammer then at the man and says "having fun yet?"
SUPERGIRL
Did I mention I'm strong?
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl lifting a big rock.
SUPERGIRL
Really, really strong?
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl smashing a giant asteroid.
SUPERGIRL
Un-freaking-believably strong?
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl breaking out of several feet of
metal where she was trapped.
SUPERGIRL
You loved that one, didn't you?
Everybody loves the muscles.
Supergirl shows her biceps. She flashes her eyebrows and
winks.
Then she chuckles.
SUPERGIRL
Yeah. I like to have fun. Lots of
fun.
CUT TO shot of Supergirl smashing a giant metal door in.
FLASH and some other JLA stand by watching her. Supergirl
turns to Flash and strikes a pose.
SUPERGIRL
I know, Superman could've done
that, but would he have looked
anywhere near this cool doing it? I
don't think so.
Flash turns to the other JLA.
FLASH
Could we keep her and send the
other one to the JSA or something?
BACK TO SCENE
SUPERGIRL
Sometimes I have too much fun. WAY
too much fun.
CUT TO a scene in Clark Kent's apartment. CLARK sits on the
sofa, reading a magazine, while Supergirl talks to LOIS LANE
(who is drinking coffee). Clark has his back to the women.
SUPERGIRL
Oh, I'm so glad you married my
little cousin.
Clark reacts when she says "little cousin" by looking up
from his magazine.
LOIS
Yeah, well, I got lucky.
SUPERGIRL
Yes. You're a really lucky woman.
He's gonna make you so happy. I
should know, I changed his diapers.
Lois reacts by spitting half her coffee. Clark rolls up his
eyes as if saying "oh, not again."
BACK TO SCENE
SUPERGIRL
You should've seen Kal's face when
I pulled that one in front of
Batman and Wonder Woman. I swear
Batman almost smiled. He never
smiles, you know. But he ALMOST
smiled that time.
Slowly, Supergirl's smile fades, leaving behind a very
serious expression.
SUPERGIRL
But it's not all fun and games.
Even when you're incredibly strong
and invulnerable and everything,
you can't win every battle.
INSERT SHOT of super-villain punching Supergirl and sending
her smashing into a wall.
SUPERGIRL
You can't out-think every opponent.
You cannot out-muscle everyone. You
cannot just punch and kick your way
out of every problem.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl throwing a punch against an ARMORED
WOMAN. She misses and the Armored Woman lands a knee on
Supergirl's stomach, making her double over in pain.
SUPERGIRL
When you do what I do. You're gonna
get hurt. Sooner or later you're
gonna feel a whole lotta pain.
INSERT SHOT of three villain holding Supergirl. She's on her
knees. Two of the villains hold her arms behind her back,
while the other one punches her in the face.
SUPERGIRL
You feel like you can't take it
anymore. Like your body is about to
explode from the pain. You want to
scream. You want to run away.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl trapped in some sort of machine
that is crushing her. She tries to break away but she can't.
SUPERGIRL
You wonder "what the hell was I
thinking?" "Why did I get myself
into this?" And you wish it was
over. You wish you were someone
else, sipping Margaritas on a
beautiful beach in a Caribbean
island.
(beat)
You just want to give up.
Long pause.
SUPERGIRL
But that's what makes you a hero,
right? That you don't give up.
INSERT SHOT of the three villains. They're still holding
Supergirl. The third villain punches her again. She's
obviously in great pain. But suddenly her expression changes
and you see the fire in her eyes.
SUPERGIRL
You might be down, but you're never
out.
INSERT SHOT of Armored Woman standing mockingly in front of
Supergirl, who is on the floor, apparently spent and beaten.
Suddenly Supergirl looks up and we see again the fire in her
eyes.
SUPERGIRL
It doesn't matter how many bones
are broken or how much pain you're
feeling or how tired you are, you
always have that extra something.
That tiny bit of reserve energy
that kicks in whenever the world is
about to end.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl trapped in the machine as earlier.
She screams. At first it sounds like a scream of pain, but
then it turns into a battle cry. She starts to break away,
and in a few seconds the machine explodes outwards, sending
bits and pieces of it everywhere.
SUPERGIRL
Because the world WOULD end if you
don't get off the floor and start
kicking some butt. Because if you
don't save the day, no one will. So
you better throw the pain and the
misery and the despair out the
window, because everything is going
to hell in a hurry and you're the
only one who can stop it.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl breaking free from the three
villains.
SUPERGIRL
You know you're gonna feel it in
the morning. You know you're gonna
walk funny for the next month, and
hope you were dead every time you
try to chew on a sandwich but you
know as well that all that is a
helluva lot better than the
alternative. And at that moment the
only thing that matters is to do
what you have to do. Because you
HAVE to do it.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl kicking the butt of the Armored
Woman.
SUPERGIRL
There's no other choice. No other
alternative. You have to do it.
(beat)
You're the hero.
INSERT SHOT of Supergirl kicking the butt of the three
villains.
SUPERGIRL
(smiles)
And it feels soooo good when your
enemies are lying on the floor,
fishing for their teeth.
(beat)
You also enjoy the happy faces of
the people you've just saved and
everything, but the fishing for the
teeth, that's just priceless.
(beat)
I'm kidding, of course. I do it for
the happy faces. I do it because I
have to. Because I couldn't live
with myself if I didn't do it.
(beat)
The fishing for the teeth is just
an added bonus. I swear it isn't
all that important.
She chuckles.
SUPERGIRL
So there you have it. Now you have
a little insight into what it feels
to be me. It's an ever-repeating
cycle of fun, showing off, battles,
pain, more pain, butt-kicking, more
pain, triumph, more pain, signing
autographs, more butt-kicking, a
bit more pain, and time permitting,
I get to have a life.
A beat.
SUPERGIRL
And the whole super-strength thing
is just so cool.
INSERT SHOTS of the same scenes as before with Supergirl
showing off her strength.
SUPERGIRL
Everyone loves the muscles.
FADE OUT.
