Supergirl: Home - Ep. 3 "Supergirl saves Leesburg"

By Ronn A. Mann

NOTE: this whole episode takes place with Supergirl at age 15. FADE IN: EXT. STREET - LEESBURG - MORNING A large double-decker bus drives through the streets of Leesburg. The bus driver sees the yellow light in the semaphore ahead and accelerates to beat the red light. Then a dog rushes through the street. The bus driver swerves to avoid the dog, loses control of the bus and heads for a group of small children playing on the sidewalk. The bus driver swerves again, and the bus topples over, about to fall on top of the children. SUPERGIRL (age 15) appears and catches the bus, but it's too heavy for her (she's not very strong at that age). She tries as hard as she can to keep the bus from falling on its side but the bus is slowly coming down. The children run away, but a small child (about two years old) just stares at the bus. The bus is four feet from crushing the child when suddenly it begins to move upwards. Supergirl turns around and sees SUPERMAN lifting the bus. SUPERMAN You know, the trick to lifting heavy objects is to lift with your legs. Supergirl just gawks at Superman as he demonstrates the proper way to lift heavy objects and saves the child. SUPERMAN (CONT'D) Mind if we have a private chat? He flies away. She stares at him, slack-jawed, for a moment then flies after him. EXT. HILL - MOMENTS LATER Superman stands next to a tree, waiting, as Supergirl lands next to him. She looks both star-stuck and embarrassed. SUPERMAN By the way, I'm Superman. I'm sure you've heard of me. She flashes a nervous grin.

2. SUPERGIRL Hi... er... I'm -- I'm Supergirl. But if you want I can change my name... Or my outfit... Or move to Mars or something. SUPERMAN (smiles) Don't worry, I'm not here to ask you to change anything about you. For what I've heard -- Supergirl -- not so much a name as a description and one that suits you quite well. And I have to admit you look pretty good in that costume. SUPERGIRL Well... thanks. (pleadingly, almost sobbing) But please don't call it a costume. It's my Supergirl outfit. SUPERMAN (chuckles) Don't be so nervous. I just came to have a friendly chat with you. We're on the same team. SUPERGIRL Yeah, but you're like the star quarterback and I'm just an aspiring cheerleader. SUPERMAN I heard you'd make a good running back. Or at least a punt returner. She blushes, completely embarrassed. SUPERGIRL You heard about that? SUPERMAN Everyone did. Don't be so shy about it. It was pretty good. I loved your speech, though I have conflicting reports as to what you actually said. Could you repeat it for me? She buries her face in her hands. SUPERGIRL Please, don't make me do it.

3. SUPERMAN What was it? (mock macho) I'm stronger than you, does it mean I'm better than you? SUPERGIRL Pleaaaase... Superman puts his hand on her shoulder. SUPERMAN Relax. I'm not going to bite you. Some people think you're my little sister and quite honestly, I'm not opposed to adopting you right now. Supergirl tries a smile. SUPERGIRL So you're not really mad at me? SUPERMAN Of course I'm not. I already told you. I've been keeping track of you for a little while. You're pretty good. Not as good as you're going to be when you grow up, but you're good. You're not an aspiring cheerleader. You might not be our star running back just yet, but you're on the right track. You're a promising rookie with a good chance at a starting position. I wanted to make sure you knew that. She swells with pride. SUPERGIRL You mean that? SUPERMAN Sure. There's something else I wanted you to know. You're very strong and very smart, but you're not omnipotent. I know how you feel right now, believe me, I do. You have so much power and you think you can handle everything life throws your way. And it's not true. Very soon you're going to face a problem you won't be able to handle by yourself. (MORE)

4. SUPERMAN (CONT'D) And I'm not saying this because it's you. I mean, it happens to all of us. At some point, we're all going to face something we cannot handle alone. Do you know what I mean? SUPERGIRL Yes. SUPERMAN And when that happens you're going to hear a voice inside your head telling you that you have to deal with it yourself. That you shouldn't ask anyone for help. That's your pride talking. Don't listen to that voice, okay. You have to understand that we do this because we want to help others. That's the only reason. Not because of fame or recognition or even respect. We help those who need our help. And sometimes we need help too and we can't let our pride get in the way because if we do, we won't be helping others. Supergirl nods. Superman fishes a small card from a pocket in his cape. The card has an "S" (just a plain "S" not the "S" symbol) and a phone number. He gives her the card. SUPERMAN (CONT'D) I want you to have this. It's my phone number. If you ever feel like you can't handle something, don't hesitate to call me. Don't let your pride get the better of you. Call me. Even if it turns out you could've handled it yourself, it's better to have one too many heroes than not enough. SUPERGIRL Okay. I promise. SUPERMAN (smiles) Good. And I want you to be ready too, because someday I'm going to be calling you for help. It's not going to happen soon. (MORE)

5. SUPERMAN (CONT'D) You're still too green. But someday when you're a bit older and more experienced you're going to get my call. You can bank on that. SUPERGIRL Really. You think I could help you? SUPERMAN Sure. Just keep going the way you're going right now. She smiles. He stares at her for a long moment, making her feel uncomfortable. SUPERMAN (CONT'D) God, you really make me wish I had a little sister. She bursts into laughter. EXT. SCHOOLYARD - DAY SUPER: Three weeks later. Linda sits on a bench under a tree along with two of her classmates, BECA and DARLA. DARLA And he hasn't eaten in like two days. The vet can't find anything wrong with him. I think he's going to die. BECA Don't say that. Bilard will be okay, you'll see. LINDA Yes, Bilard is the toughest dog I know. I'm sure he'll be okay. Beca and Darla stare at Linda as if she has just said the meanest thing in the world. Then Darla bursts into tears and runs away. Beca glares at Linda. BECA How can you be so mean? LINDA What? BECA Geez, Linda, and I thought you were her friend.

6. Beca walks away, going after Darla. LINDA What did I say? I just -- Linda sits alone with no clue as to what just happened. EXT. STREET - AFTERNOON Linda walks down the street, heading for her home. OFFICER GETZ stands next to his patrol car across the street. OFFICER GETZ Hi, Linda. Need a ride home? LINDA Hi, Officer Getz. Thanks, I'll just walk home. OFFICER GETZ You sure? LINDA Yeah. Linda continues walking. JACK comes out from one of the stores. He sees Officer Getz and smiles. JACK Hey, Bill. Long time no seen. OFFICER GETZ Jacko. What are you doing here on Leesburg? We FOLLOW Linda as she walks away. JACK I've got business here. I would've come before but I loath so much the worthless imbeciles that live in this nauseating town. Linda stops in disbelief. She turns around. Jack is smiling warmly, his expression completely at odds with what he just said. Officer Getz looks angry. OFFICER GETZ Excuse me!? You better take that back.

7. Jack can't believe his reaction. JACK (beat) What? Linda frowns. INT. LIVING ROOM - DANVERS' HOME - NIGHT Linda, FRED and SYLVIA eat dinner. LINDA All I said was that Bilard was the toughest dog I knew and that he was going to be okay. And Darla and Beca got angry with me like I had just said the meanest thing in the world. They didn't speak to me all day. Even Susie snubbed me. But none of them would tell me why they were so angry with me. FRED Maybe they misinterpreted what you said. LINDA But how? I've been thinking about it all day. How could they have misinterpreted what I said? SYLVIA Are you sure that's what you said? Because sometimes you think you said something when you said something else. LINDA Even if I didn't say what I thought I said, they still shouldn't have snubbed me. They could've asked me to clarify or something. FRED You got a point there. You should probably talk to them first thing in the morning. Fred finishes eating. FRED (CONT'D) Now, if you excuse me, I'll take a bath.

8. He stands up and goes up the stairs. SYLVIA Your dad's right. You should talk to Darla and Beca first thing in the morning. You should apologize to them, just in case you did say something wrong. I mean, sometimes you can be a really stupid, obnoxious brat. Linda's eyes pop open. LINDA Mom, how can you say that? SYLVIA Say what? They stare at each other for a long moment. INT. LINDA'S ROOM - NIGHT Linda lies on her bed, eyes open, looking concerned. LINDA (to herself) How can she say that to me? (beat) Never mind. She closes her eyes and listens to the sounds of the night. She has incredibly good hearing and can hear a mosquito a mile away. We hear insects buzzing, like a beehive. Linda frowns. She doesn't like that sound. Now we hear air rushing through trees. She likes it better. Now we hear the sound of water, like a small creek. Linda smiles. Then we hear strange voices. Eerily inhuman voices. They belong to the TWINS. TWIN 1 (O.S.) This is such a beautiful town. TWIN 2 (O.S.) Indeed it is. With such beautiful people. TWIN 1 (O.S.) Indeed they are. I cannot wait to kill every one of them. Linda's eyes pop open.

9. TWIN 2 (O.S.) That is such a beautiful thought. TWIN 1 (O.S.) Indeed it is. A beautiful thought. A beat. TWIN 2 (O.S.) You should not listen to other people's conversations, Supergirl. It is not polite. TWIN 1 (O.S.) Indeed it is not. Linda jumps off the bed. She looks outside the window, trying to find the source of the voices. She changes into Supergirl and jumps out of the window. EXT. SKY ABOVE LEESBURG - NIGHT Supergirl flies around. She focuses, trying to hear the voices again. She hears the insects buzzing, then the air, then the water, but no voices. EXT. CREEK - NIGHT Supergirl lands next to the creek. It's the same sound we've heard twice before. She looks around and finds something on the shore: footprints. Clearly inhuman footprints. INT. LIVING ROOM - DANVERS' HOME - MORNING The Danvers family eats their breakfast. Linda looks troubled. She doesn't know if she should tell her parents about the voices. She doesn't know if she should ask her mother about what she heard her say last night. FRED (to Linda) You're awfully quiet this morning, honey. A beat. LINDA Dad... eh... something happened last night. I heard voices. Weird voices.

10. SYLVIA You shouldn't listen to other people's conversations, honey. We've already told you that. LINDA Yeah, mom. I know. I shouldn't invade other people's privacy. But those were really weird voices. SYLVIA Still. That's no excuse. LINDA (beat) They said they were going to kill everyone. A beat. Fred and Sylvia exchange glances. FRED Where did you hear them? LINDA Near the creek next to the Banner house. I flew there but I found nothing but weird footprints. FRED I'll check it out later. LINDA Dad. I mean really weird footprints. Definitively not human. FRED It was probably a cow or something. LINDA No, dad. The footprints were where the voices came from. And they were fresh. If there had been a cow around, I would've heard it. And they didn't look like the footprints of any animal I've ever seen either. FRED Let's finish breakfast and we'll go check it out, okay? EXT. CREEK - MORNING The same spot on the creek's shore we saw before, only there are no footprints now.

11. Linda looks around, trying to find the footprints, but can't. Fred stands a couple of yards away, in his police uniform. LINDA I swear they were here, dad. FRED Maybe you dreamed it. LINDA They were real. I swear. FRED I believe you, Linda. (beat) Maybe the wind erased them. LINDA Maybe THEY erased them. FRED Don't worry too much about that. You're going to get paranoid or something. LINDA Dad, don't joke. I'm not kidding. FRED I know you're not. But I got to go. Gotta work, okay. Fred heads for his truck. Linda continues looking for footprints without luck. A moment later, she gives up. She sighs and walks away. EXT. HOUSE - DAY Linda stands outside the wooden door of a house. She rings the bell. We hear the footsteps of someone approaching the door. Linda flashes her friendliest smile in anticipation to the opening of the door. Darla opens the door. LINDA Hi, Darla. I came -- Darla slams the door shut. LINDA (CONT'D) Darla, please! I came to apologize.

12. A beat. LINDA (CONT'D) Please! Another beat. DARLA (O.S.) I don't wanna talk to you. LINDA Darla, I'm sorry. I didn't know what I was saying. Literally. Beat. LINDA (CONT'D) C'mon. At least tell me Bilard's okay. DARLA (O.S.) Don't you dare mention Bilard! LINDA Darla! Please! Talk to me. A beat. Then Darla opens the door about three inches. She looks mad. DARLA I can't believe you said that, Linda. I thought you were my friend. LINDA I AM your friend. I'm sorry I said whatever it was I said. DARLA You're really sorry? LINDA Yes. Yes, I am. Really, incredibly, indubitably sorry. Darla's expression softens a bit. DARLA You won't say that again? LINDA Never. Ever, ever, ever, ever again. So you forgive me? Darla half-smiles.

13. DARLA Yeah. She opens the door wide. Linda smiles. LINDA Great! Thank you -- thank you -- thank you. Darla gasps in shock and then slams the door shut again. Linda grimaces. LINDA (CONT'D) Oh, not again. She sighs, turns around and walks away. INT. LINDA'S ROOM - NIGHT Linda lies on her bed, unable to sleep. LINDA (to herself) I can't believe it. Then she closes her eyes and focuses, like the previous night. She listens to the sounds outside. We hear cars. Some cows. The creek again. She focuses there for a long moment, thinking she might hear the voices again. But nothing happens. She focuses somewhere else. We hear more miscellaneous sounds for a while. The volume of the sounds lowers slowly as Linda falls asleep. Then she awakes with a start. MALE VOICE -- gonna get you, you little -- FEMALE VOICE No, please! No! Leave him alone! She bolts out of her bed, already in full Supergirl outfit, and jumps out the window. EXT. PARKING LOT - NIGHT The parking lot of the Sunset Mall. Two young men fight. The tall man is VICTOR. He's chasing after a small, scrawny man called DYLAN. He'd easily catch him if BRANDY wasn't pulling at his arm. BRANDY Please, leave him alone!

14. VICTOR I'm gonna break every bone in your body! Supergirl lands in front of Victor. SUPERGIRL Stop it! Victor tries to go around Supergirl, but she grabs him by the shoulder and pushes him to the ground. SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) I said, stop it! VICTOR Let me go! I gotta teach that little SOB a lesson he won't forget! DYLAN Don't let him go! He's crazy. SUPERGIRL What happened here? BRANDY He just went nuts and attacked Dylan. VICTOR Let me go, dammit! SUPERGIRL (to Victor) Calm down. Don't make me hurt you. VICTOR Calm down? Calm down!! After what he said about my wife, I'm gonna shoot him! DYLAN Wife? What wife!? I haven't said anything about your wife, you creep. (to Supergirl) Don't believe him. SUPERGIRL I don't care what anyone did or didn't say about anyone else. You're calming down and no one is shooting anyone else and that's that, you got it?

15. Victor calms down a bit. He's still glaring at Dylan, but doesn't look like he wants to kill him anymore. Supergirl lets him go. He stands up. SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) Are you two done fighting? Victor nods slowly. Dylan nods too. SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) (to Dylan) Now apologize. DYLAN What? I didn't -- SUPERGIRL Just do it, okay. DYLAN Oh... okay. (to Victor) Sorry, man. I got nothing against your wife. She's a lovely woman. SUPERGIRL (to Victor) Your turn. VICTOR (reluctantly) Sorry about trying to kill you. SUPERGIRL Good. Now go home. Victor makes a dismissive gesture, turns around and walks away. BRANDY Thank you, Supergirl. I really thought Victor was going to kill him. SUPERGIRL You're welcome. Now go home. I'm actually past my bedtime. Brandy and Dylan chuckle. SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) The worst part is that I'm not really kidding. Brandy and Dylan turn around and head away. Supergirl is about to take off when a voice stops her.

16. TWIN 1 (O.S.) You cannot save everyone, Supergirl. TWIN 2 (O.S.) Indeed you cannot. TWIN 1 (O.S.) We will kill all at the end. TWIN 2 (O.S.) Indeed we will. SUPERGIRL (loudly) Who are you? What do you want? No response. Then Supergirl notices a man standing next to the mall entrance, who heard her talking, and is giving her a funny look. She thinks about explaining to the man, but decides against it. She takes off. INT. LIVING ROOM - DANVERS' HOME - MORNING The Danvers family eats breakfast again. LINDA I tell you, it's the weird voices. They make everyone hear the wrong thing. FRED Are you sure it wasn't a simple misunderstanding? LINDA You should've seen the guy's face. He really wanted to kill the other guy. He would've if I hadn't stopped him. SYLVIA People get angry at each other all the time. They even threaten each other, but they hardly ever shoot each other. LINDA No. He was about to kill him. I saw it in his eyes. And then I heard the voices again. They talked to me. I couldn't tell where the voices were coming from and you know how good my ears are.

17. FRED Maybe the voices were inside your head. LINDA Dad! I wasn't hallucinating. FRED I meant like a psychic thing. LINDA Oh. Well, it might have been. I don't know much about psychic stuff. But the thing is -- if you hear someone say something really mean, don't get angry, okay? Promise me? Sylvia chuckles. SYLVIA You want us to promise you to act like adults? LINDA Well... yeah. Would you promise me? Fred and Sylvia chuckle. FRED I'll do my best, honey. But you know how it is. I spend all day dressed in my policeman costume, playing with my gun. It kinda brings out the kid in me. LINDA Dad! Don't joke. I'm getting scared here. I think I'm way over my head with this. SYLVIA Okay, Linda. We promise you to act like adults. Are you happy now? LINDA Thanks, mom. EXT. LEESBURG - DAY We see a COLLAGE of scenes. Linda walks around Leesburg, listening to other people, just in case another fight breaks out. There are a couple of times were people seem angry with each other but all of them turn out to be false alarms.

18. INT. LINDA'S ROOM - NIGHT Linda lies on her bed, eyes wide open and unable to sleep. We hear the sounds of the night. She's looking for any kind of conversations, either from the Twins or people about to kill each other. MALE VOICE 1 (O.S.) ...And then she says that I'm not tall enough for her... Another place. FEMALE VOICE 1 (O.S.) ...You're not going to do this again, are you? CHILD VOICE 1 (O.S.) No, mom, I promise. Another place. MALE VOICE 2 (O.S.) ... You sure? FEMALE VOICE 2 (O.S.) I'm sure. He told me he was going to kill her. Linda sits up, worried. MALE VOICE 3 (O.S.) Don't miss next week's episode of "Acapulco mercenaries." She frowns. Then we hear theme music. She relaxes and lies down again. Another place. TWIN 1 (O.S.) Are you looking for us, Supergirl? She sits up again. LINDA Who are you?! What do you want? TWIN 2 (O.S.) We just want to have fun. TWIN 1 (O.S.) Indeed we do.

19. TWIN 2 (O.S.) We will kill everyone. TWIN 1 (O.S.) Indeed we will. You cannot stop us. TWIN 2 (O.S.) Indeed you cannot. LINDA I won't let you hurt anyone, you hear me?! A beat. Then we hear some creepy, inhuman laughter. She jumps off the bed, in full Supergirl outfit. SUPERGIRL Get out of my town! Don't you dare hurt anyone! Fred opens the door. Sylvia stands behind him. FRED You okay, honey? Supergirl turns to face them. She looks both angry and scared. SUPERGIRL It's that... SYLVIA The voices again? SUPERGIRL Uh-huh. I have to go out and find them. She turns to the window. FRED Linda... SUPERGIRL Dad, no curfew, okay. I need to do this. FRED Be careful. Supergirl nods, then flies out the window. EXT. SKY ABOVE LEESBURG - NIGHT Supergirl flies around, looking at the ground, trying to find the Twins.

20. TWIN 1 (O.S.) We are not there, Supergirl. SUPERGIRL Show yourselves! A beat. TWIN 2 (O.S.) Not there either. A beat. TWIN 1 (O.S.) You are way off. A beat. TWIN 2 (O.S.) Cold. Very cold. Then the creepy, inhuman laughter again. SUPERGIRL I'm gonna get you, you hear! INT. LINDA'S ROOM - MORNING CLOSE ON Supergirl (still wearing the outfit) sleeping on her bed. A hand touches her in the shoulder. She sits up with a jolt and grabs Sylvia's hand, startling her. SYLVIA Geez, don't do that again, Linda. SUPERGIRL Sorry, mom. I'm... I was... SYLVIA We didn't hear you come in last night. SUPERGIRL I spent all night looking for the voices. I'm so tired. SYLVIA If you're so tired, why don't you stay home? You can skip school. SUPERGIRL No, mom. I'll be ready in a moment. Supergirl stands up. Sylvia chuckles.

21. SYLVIA Look, I really love it that you actually want to go to school but, seriously, if you need to rest you can skip one day. I'm sure it won't hurt your grades. SUPERGIRL It's not that. I need to get my mind off the voices. They're driving me crazy. SYLVIA You sure? SUPERGIRL Uh-huh. SYLVIA (beat, thinks) You've never skip a single day of school, have you? INT. CLASSROOM - DAY CLOSE ON Mrs. Wilcox, the math teacher. A short woman in her late fifties. There's a complex math problem on the blackboard and she's explaining the students how to solve it. MRS. WILCOX And then you take X, and multiply it by... She notices something. REVERSE ANGLE Linda sleeps placidly on her desk. Mrs. Wilcox begins to walk very slowly toward her. The boy sitting behind Linda taps on her chair with his foot, trying to wake her up. Mrs. Wilcox stands next to Linda for several seconds. She seems amused, not angry. MRS. WILCOX (CONT'D) Linda... She places her hand on Linda's shoulder. Linda sits up so quickly she breaks the back of the chair. Everyone laughs. LINDA I'm sorry, Mrs. Wilcox. I didn't mean to fall asleep. I was so tired that --

22. She notices the chair, looks scared. LINDA (CONT'D) I don't -- I don't know how that happened... I... MRS. WILCOX Oh, well, that confirms it. This school is officially falling apart. Now, Linda, why don't you go tell Mr. Higgins that you need a new chair? And splash some cold water on your face while you're at it. Linda stands up. LINDA Yes, Mrs. Wilcox. I'll do that. She notices that one of the desks is empty. Darla's desk. INT. BATHROOM - MOMENTS LATER Linda enters the school's bathroom. She heads for the sink and splashes cold water on her face. The we HEAR something. Someone's crying inside one of the stalls. Linda looks inside the stall with her X-ray vision. LINDA Darla, are you okay? DARLA Leave me alone. LINDA Please, don't tell me something happened to Bilard. Darla sobs. DARLA No. It's mom and dad. This morning dad said something really mean to mom and she said she was going to kill him. LINDA They didn't hurt each other, right? DARLA (beat, sob) No. But mom really looked like she wanted to kill dad. (MORE)

23. DARLA (CONT'D) If dad hadn't left the house, she would have hurt him. LINDA Don't worry, I won't let anything happen to your mom and dad. She grimaces. She shouldn't have said that. DARLA (beat) I know. A beat as Linda realizes what that meant. LINDA I meant that I... er... (beat) And how's Bilard? DARLA (beat) I'm so glad you're here. EXT. STREET - AFTERNOON Linda and Darla walk down the street leading to Darla's home. Darla stops. She looks scared to take another step. LINDA Don't worry, your mom and dad are okay. DARLA You sure? LINDA Uh-huh. DARLA Sure-sure? LINDA Yes. A beat. Darla stares at Linda with an odd expression. She knows who she is. DARLA You know you're my best friend, right?

24. LINDA (chuckles) Yeah, I could tell by the way you slammed your door on my face. Twice. DARLA Well, you were so mean! LINDA That wasn't me. And it wasn't your dad who said those means things to your mom either. It's some kind of monster. Two of them. DARLA And you're gonna... you know... LINDA I don't know what to do. I've been looking for them like crazy the last three days. But I can't find them. I know they want to kill everyone. So far no one's been hurt but -- DARLA (scared) They want to kill everyone? LINDA Don't worry, I'll take care of it. DARLA How? You can't even find them. LINDA Hey! I'm pretty resourceful when I need to be. DARLA Could you stay a little while? Just till dad comes home. LINDA Er... Darla, I'd love to, but I have to protect everyone. DARLA Please, I'm scared. Really scared. I mean you can, you know, hear what happens everywhere from my house, right?

25. LINDA Well, not EVERYWHERE but... okay, I'll stay till your dad comes back home. DARLA Thanks. Darla smiles. She's still scared, though. They walk toward Darla's house. LINDA And, you know, when did you figure it out? DARLA Are you kidding me? I've known you since we were six. I know you're a natural blonde. LINDA Yeah, I told mom that suddenly becoming a brunette at fifteen wasn't going to fool anyone. I thought about wearing the brunette wig while I was Supergirl, but every time I'd fly the thing would just rocket out of my head. Darla chuckles. LINDA (CONT'D) And then I thought about using something to hold the wig in place, but it made me look like Alice in Wonderland. It looked so ridiculous. Darla bursts into laughter. INT. KITCHEN - ATKINS' HOME - LATE AFTERNOON Darla's mother, MRS. ATKINS, serves a large piece of pie to Linda and Darla. MRS. ATKINS I don't know how Myles could've said something like that to me. I was so angry. LINDA But why were you so angry? MRS. ATKINS Excuse me?

26. LINDA Darla said you threatened to kill him. I mean, no matter what he said... MRS. ATKINS (beat) You know, you're right. I don't know why I was so angry. I mean I should've been angry, but not that much. It was like something came over me. DARLA Like something possessed you? MRS. ATKINS Oh yes, it was the evil spirit of the Indians buried under this house. Booo! Or maybe it was the spirit of your grandmother. She never really liked me. She thought I wasn't good enough for her son. DARLA Mom, don't joke. Something's happening. Then we HEAR the front door unlocking. MR. ATKINS enters the house. We can see him from the kitchen. Mrs. Atkins walks to the doorway, staring at him. His eyes are fixed on hers. They look embarrassed more than anything. Darla looks scared. MRS. ATKINS I'm sorry, Myles, I just... MR. ATKINS No, don't apologize. I'm sure I said something really stupid. They hug. Darla smiles. She looks relieved. Linda smiles too. TWIN 1 (O.S.) And so it begins. Linda's smile drops out of her face in a hurry. MR. ATKINS It's just that you're such a pitiful piece of garbage. I hate your guts so much. His expression is amicable, completely at odds with what he just said.

27. Mrs. Atkins gets angry. MRS. ATKINS Yeah, well, you're the worst husband in the planet. You're nothing more than a momma's boy who never grew up. Now Mr. Atkins gets angry too. MR. ATKINS That's your idea of an insult? Boy, you're the stupidest woman in Leesburg. Darla rushes out of the kitchen toward them. She looks scared to death. DARLA Stop it! Please don't fight. You're the worst parents in the world, but you're all I have. MR. ATKINS How dare you, you stupid little piece of crap! Darla gets angry. DARLA You're calling me crap! You're full of it! Literally. I've seen your underwear when mom washes it. Linda doesn't know what to do. She stands up and heads for the Atkins family, but the noises around her stop her dead on her tracks. MALE VOICE 1 (O.S.) I'm going to kill you, you bastard! FEMALE VOICE 1 (O.S.) Just try it, you moron, and I'll make you eat your own intestines! Linda turns around. The whole world is going crazy. She uses her X-ray vision and sees everyone screaming at each other. Then a thought occurs to her. LINDA Mom! Dad! EXT. DANVERS' HOME - NIGHT Linda rushes toward her home. We hear the voices of Fred and Sylvia, arguing loudly.

28. SYLVIA (O.S.) You're nothing but a worthless has-been of a cop who never does anything around the house! FRED (O.S.) That's such an insult coming from overrated housekeeper who never finished high school! Linda rushes into the house. INT. LIVING ROOM - DANVERS' HOME Linda enters the house. Fred and Sylvia glare and scream at each other. SYLVIA Yeah, well, you're nothing but a -- LINDA Mom, NO! Sylvia and Fred turn their glares at Linda. LINDA (CONT'D) Please, don't fight. The voices are doing this to you. You're not -- SYLVIA How dare you speak like that to your parents! You ungrateful little freak! Linda growls in frustration and rushes up to her room. FRED Come back here, you little -- INT. LINDA'S ROOM Linda enters and locks the door behind her. She covers her ears. She doesn't want to hear her parents fighting. She doesn't know what to do. She just stands there, covering her ears for several seconds, then her eyes focus on her desk. She thinks about it, then opens a drawer and extracts the card that Superman gave her. She struggles with the thought for a moment. Should she call him or not? Then she puts the card back in the drawer. A moment later she picks up the phone and dials. LINDA Come on come on come on.

29. A WOMAN answers. It's Karen Starr's mother. MRS. STARR (O.S.) Hello. LINDA Hi, Mrs. Starr, it's Linda. I need -- MRS. STARR (O.S.) Hi, Linda, how are you? LINDA Fine -- thanks. I really need to talk to Karen. MRS. STARR (O.S.) Sorry, but Karen is grounded. LINDA What? Grounded again? Why? MRS. STARR (O.S.) Do you really need to ask why at this point? LINDA Please, can you just put her on for a moment. I really need to talk to her. MRS. STARR (O.S.) Sorry. This time she's earned herself the full grounding package, including no television or phone calls for a week. Linda is getting desperate. LINDA Please, just for a moment. I really need her. MRS. STARR (O.S.) Sorry, but no. She has to learn at some point not to -- LINDA Please. This is superhero business, okay. Something very bad is happening in Leesburg and I really, really need her. MRS. STARR (O.S.) The answer is no, Linda.

30. LINDA I don't mean to be rude, Mrs. Starr, but I'm not talking about a tea party here, okay. I'm talking about people in danger. I don't know what to do. I need Power Girl here to give me a hand. MRS. STARR (O.S.) (beat) Linda, I know who you are. I mean as a person. I know you wouldn't even think of insisting if you didn't have a very good reason. And I'd love nothing more that to have my daughter spend all her time with you, hoping that some of those lovely qualities of yours would rub onto her. But I have to draw the line somewhere. What Karen did deserves a punishment, and if I just let her off the hook even to do superhero stuff, she's going to think that she can get away with anything so long as she saves someone afterwards. And I don't want her to learn that, do you understand me? LINDA Yeah, but -- I really, really need her. I don't know what to do and everything's going crazy. Could you just -- MRS. STARR (O.S.) Linda, let me put it this way. I love my daughter, but I know she's nowhere near as smart as you are. So if YOU don't know what to do, I don't think she's going to be of much use to you. LINDA But -- but. I need her. MRS. STARR (O.S.) Honestly, if Karen is the only one who can help you right now, then Leesburg is in much deeper trouble than you think. Now if you don't mind, I'm missing my favorite show. Take care, Linda. Say hi to your mom. She hangs up.

31. Linda keeps the handset to her ear for several seconds, still trying to think of an argument to convince Mrs. Starr. Then she hangs up. She looks at her desk again. Struggling with her thoughts. She opens the drawer and picks up Superman's card again. She puts the card on the table and picks up the phone. She struggles with her emotions a few more seconds, then dials the number on the card. The phone rings a couple of times, then someone picks it up, but no one speaks. A few seconds go by in silence. LINDA Er... hi --? SUPERMAN (O.S.) Supergirl? LINDA Yes, it's me. I... I... SUPERMAN (O.S.) You need my help. Tell me what's happened. LINDA I... three days ago, I said something nice about a dog, but everyone thought I said something really mean and got angry with me. And then I heard voices. I mean, every night when I go to sleep I listen to all the sounds on Leesburg. I have really good hearing. I can hear a mosquito a mile away. But never mind that. I was listening around when I heard two really weird voices talking about killing everyone in Leesburg. And then everybody started to misinterpret what everyone else said, and everybody got really angry at each other. Right now my parents are going at each other's throats downstairs. When I tried to talk to them, they thought I had insulted them. I don't know what to do.

32. SUPERMAN (O.S.) Don't worry. You did the right thing by calling me. But right now what you need is information. So this is what's going to happen. I'm going to call a friend of mine, her name is Oracle. She deals with information. She knows everything and everyone. You can trust her like you trust me. She's going to call you, and you're going to tell her everything you told me. She'll tell you everything you need to know and get you all the help you need. Do you understand me? LINDA Yes. SUPERMAN (O.S.) Good. Relax, I got your back. Now hang up and wait for her call. He hangs up, and so does she. Linda waits impatiently. We hear the conversation between Superman and Oracle, though obviously Linda doesn't. The phone RINGS once. ORACLE (O.S.) Oracle here, what can I do you for, Kal-El? SUPERMAN (O.S.) Remember Supergirl? ORACLE (O.S.) Your little sister? SUPERMAN (O.S.) She's not my sister. ORACLE (O.S.) Yes, I remember her. What's happened? SUPERMAN (O.S.) Something's wrong in Leesburg. I need you to call her. ORACLE (O.S.) Sure thing.

33. SUPERMAN (O.S.) One thing -- she's very smart, but she's just fifteen. Know what I mean? ORACLE (O.S.) Hey, I still remember what it feels to be fifteen. It's wasn't that long ago. SUPERMAN (O.S.) Take good care of her, okay? ORACLE (O.S.) I'll pretend she's your sister. SUPERMAN (O.S.) Do you have her phone number? ORACLE (O.S.) You doubt my powers? Oracle hangs up. A second later Linda's phone rings. She quickly picks it up. LINDA Oracle? ORACLE (O.S.) Yes. Supergirl, I presume. LINDA Yes. Can you help me? ORACLE (O.S.) That would depend on what exactly is wrong. Tell me what's happened so far. Just the facts, please. LINDA Everything's going crazy here. Three days ago I heard some really weird voices saying they were going to kill everyone in Leesburg. And the voices knew I was listening to them. And now everyone misinterprets what everyone else says. And they're about to kill each other. ORACLE (O.S.) What do you mean "misinterprets"?

34. LINDA I just told my parents that they shouldn't fight and they reacted like I said the curse word of the century. And when people talk, all I hear are insults. I'm not sure that's what they're really saying, but that's what I hear. ORACLE (O.S.) Okay, give me a moment. (beat, then to herself) Keywords... sound... insult... misinterpretation... strange voices... (beat) How many voices did you hear? LINDA I think they were two. Although the two voices sounded almost the same. ORACLE (O.S.) Two... yes... what you have there is a case of the "Twins." LINDA How do I defeat them? ORACLE (O.S.) Well... here's the thing. I can't find anyone who has defeated them. All anyone's managed to do is damage control. LINDA Please tell me you're kidding. ORACLE (O.S.) I'm not. But don't worry. There are things you can do. The key is sound. The Twins use it and make people hear what they want them to hear. They use the sound and some minor psychic skills to force people to hurt each other. And when you see them -- they look like two kids. But that's only an illusion. Don't be fooled by it. They're monsters. Oracle continues talking, but Linda can't hear her.

35. ORACLE (O.S.)(CONT'D) I'm going to send someone to help you. Just give me a moment to find someone near -- LINDA Oracle? Are you still there? ORACLE (O.S.) What? Supergirl can you hear -- LINDA (scared) Oracle? Please answer me. ORACLE (O.S.) (loudly) Supergirl, what's going on? LINDA (beat) I can't hear you, Oracle. I don't know if you can hear me, but I think the Twins are jamming the sound of your voice. If you can hear me, please send someone, okay? Linda hangs up. TWIN 1 She cannot help you, Supergirl. TWIN 2 You are on your own. TWIN 1 Indeed you are. Linda looks desperate. Again, we hear the conversation between Oracle and Superman. A RING. SUPERMAN (O.S.) What happened? ORACLE (O.S.) Supergirl is way out of her league. She's dealing with the Twins. You probably heard of them. Linda doesn't know what to do. Is she supposed to stay next to the phone, waiting for Oracle to call again? Or is she supposed to go out and deal with it herself?

36. SUPERMAN (O.S.) The Twins? I heard they're dangerous. Is there anyone who can help her? ORACLE (O.S.) How about you? SUPERMAN (O.S.) I'm busy and at least fifteen minutes away. Anyone closer? ORACLE (O.S.) No one who's dealt with the twins before. The sound of Fred and Sylvia arguing downstairs gets much louder. Then it stops. We hear the front door open and then slam shut. Linda turns into Supergirl and rushes downstairs. INT. LIVING ROOM Supergirl looks around. Her parents are gone, but something catches her attention. She walks to the counter that divides the kitchen from the living room. SUPERMAN (O.S.) How about someone who hasn't dealt with them? What about Flash? ORACLE (O.S.) He's out for the next two weeks. You're the only one close enough. Supergirl opens a panel on the counter. Fred keeps two shotguns there. The shotguns are missing. She gasps in horror. She rushes out of the house. EXT. DANVERS' HOME SUPERMAN (O.S.) I'll need ten more minutes here and fifteen to get to Leesburg. Are you sure there's no one closer? Supergirl comes out of the house. The trails of Fred's pickup truck lead to Leesburg. In the distance, we see downtown Leesburg. There seems to be a large fire. Supergirl takes off.

37. ORACLE (O.S.) I'm sure. SUPERMAN (O.S.) Well, tell her I'll be there in no time. Calm her down. ORACLE (O.S.) I can't talk to her. The Twins interfered with the call. EXT. DOWNTOWN LEESBURG - NIGHT Fifty people scream nonsense at each other on the top of their lungs. Everyone seems angry and about to start killing each other. Supergirl hovers a dozen feet above them. She stares aghast at the sight of the people she knows turned into homicidal maniacs. SUPERGIRL Please, don't hurt each other! Everyone turns their anger to her. They scream at her. SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) Yes, that's it! Be angry with me, not with each other. Two people raise their shotguns and fire at Supergirl. The pellets bounce off her body. SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) Yes! Empty your guns on me. That's what you should do. Someone throws a rope at Supergirl that ties around her neck. He tries to pull her down but can't. Other people grab the rope and pull too, not moving her an inch. Then the people holding the rope begin to fight with each other. SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) No, no! Fight with me, not with each other. They're not listening to her. She hovers down and tries to separate them. Some of the people begin to hit her, hurting themselves in the process. But most fight each other. Supergirl is getting desperate. She flies up again. SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) (yelling) Come on! Fight me! Be angry with me!

38. But people aren't listening to her. Then she remembers what Oracle said. ORACLE (O.S.) The key is sound. She has an idea. She flies up about a thousand yards and begins to fly around in a wide circle. She accelerates as fast as she can't. She isn't trying to create a tornado. She's trying to cause a sonic boom. As soon as she passes Match I a loud noise shatters every window in a two-block radius. Everyone drops to the floor. Their ears ringing. They can't hear a thing now. Supergirl hovers down to the ground. Everyone is writhing on the ground holding their ears. They're in great pain, but the anger seems gone. She walks through the mass of bodies on the ground until she finds Fred and Sylvia. She puts her hand on Fred's shoulder. He looks up. All the anger is gone from his face. Slowly the people get back to their feet, still holding their ears. Supergirl walks to a large building and uses her heat vision to write on the wall. She writes: "Danger. Go home. I'll deal with it." Slowly, the people head back to their homes. Supergirl herds them until all of them have left the block. Then she notices a couple of children. She motions them to follow the others, but the children just stare at her with oddly blank expressions on their faces. Then it downs on her. The children are the Twins. TWIN 1 You spoiled our fun. TWIN 2 Indeed you did. TWIN 1 You should pay for that. TWIN 2 Indeed you should. Suddenly some invisible force hits Supergirl and sends her crashing against a wall. She stands up, dazed by the impact.

39. She looks around, but the Twins are gone. She tries to take off, but an invisible force sends her crashing into a tree in the Centennial Park. EXT. CENTENNIAL PARK This is the Centennial Park that will be renamed to Memorial Park after they add the Supergirl statue (which doesn't exist yet of course). There are only a handful of trees here. The ground is mostly small rocks and dirt. Supergirl stands up. She's a bit hurt but not too much. The Twins stand ten yards away from her. TWIN 1 You are going to die tonight. TWIN 2 Indeed you are. Supergirl rushes to the Twins, but they seem to teleport. Every time she gets near them, they just vanish and reappear a dozen yards away. Then she remembers Oracle's words again. ORACLE (O.S.) And when you see them -- they look like two kids. But that's only an illusion. Don't be fooled by it. INSERT SHOT of the creek where Supergirl found the weird footprints on the shore. BACK TO SCENE Supergirl hovers a few feet off the ground and uses her superbreath to freeze the ground. Then she uses her heat vision to melt the ice. Now the ground is all mud. An invisible force hits her from behind and sends her flying forward. She regains control in mid-flight, flips on the air and lands on her feet. She looks back and notices a set of weird tracks leading to where she was standing when she got hit. She smiles. SUPERGIRL You're gonna get your butts kicked tonight. Indeed you are.

40. She rushes toward the footprints. The creature runs away (creating more footprints) but she catches up to it and lands a nasty punch that sends the Twin crashing into a wall. The little kid vanishes and the real creature becomes visible, slumped on the wall, out cold. It's some kind of a goat-legged, toad-headed monster. The other little kid vanishes too. Supergirl looks around, trying to find the other set of footprints. She does. The Twin tries to run away but she catches it and slams it against the wall where the other Twin is unconscious, knocking it out too. She walks to them, looking all cocky and proud of herself. SUPERGIRL This is my town. Indeed it is. She breaks off a lamppost and ties it around the unconscious Twins, just in case they wake up. Then she goes to get another lamppost. INT. LIVING ROOM - DANVERS' HOME - MOMENTS LATER Fred and Sylvia stand in tense expectation. Supergirl enters, looking like she just won a gold medal in the Olympics. Sylvia hugs her. SUPERGIRL Are you -- Fred and Sylvia react as if she had screamed on the top of her lungs. (Their ears still hurt.) SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) (mouthing) Sorry. Sorry. Fred and Sylvia hug Supergirl. FRED (mouthing) Are you okay? Supergirl's smile widens. SUPERGIRL (mouthing) I won. Then the phone rings. Fred and Sylvia react again. Supergirl rushes to her room to answer it.

41. INT. LINDA'S ROOM Supergirl closes the door behind her and answers the phone. She speaks in hushed tones. SUPERGIRL Hello. ORACLE (O.S.) Supergirl, are you okay? SUPERGIRL Sure. I won. ORACLE (O.S.) (beat) What do you mean you won? SUPERGIRL I beat the Twins. It wasn't that difficult actually. ORACLE (O.S.) Are you sure? SUPERGIRL Yes. I knocked them out and tied them up with a couple of lampposts. ORACLE (O.S.) Oh, you're really going to tell me the whole story, but right now give me a minute. I need to call off the army I was sending you way. SUPERGIRL Sure. We hear a phone ringing. SUPERMAN (O.S.) What happened? ORACLE (O.S.) She says she won. SUPERMAN (O.S.) Are you serious? ORACLE (O.S.) That's what she says. SUPERMAN (O.S.) By herself?

42. ORACLE (O.S.) Apparently. I haven't heard the whole story yet. SUPERMAN (O.S.) I have to say I'm impressed. ORACLE (O.S.) Are you sure she's not your little sister? SUPERMAN (O.S.) I'm kinda hoping she is. ORACLE (O.S.) Well, I'll send a clean-up crew to Leesburg. SUPERMAN (O.S.) Yes, do that. Bye. He hangs up. ORACLE (O.S.) Still there? SUPERGIRL Yes. ORACLE (O.S.) Now tell me the whole story. How did you beat them? And don't be brief. SUPERGIRL After they jammed you, the Twins gathered everyone near the Centennial Park, and everyone had guns and stuff and they were about to shoot each other. Then I remember that you told me sound was the key, so I flew up and caused a sonic boom. ORACLE (O.S.) A sonic boom? Are you that fast? SUPERGIRL I think I can fly Match II. Is everyone going to be okay? I knew that would make them deaf but I was hoping it's not permanent. ORACLE (O.S.) How high were you?

43. SUPERGIRL About a mile. ORACLE (O.S.) They'll be okay. Their ears will ring for a couple of hours, but that's it. Just keep everyone away from loud noises. I'm going to send a few doctors there, to give everyone a checkup. They'll be there in the morning. SUPERGIRL Yes, that's a good idea. ORACLE (O.S.) Then what happened? SUPERGIRL Then the Twins appeared. The two weird little kids. I tried to catch them but they seemed too fast. And they kept attacking me and I couldn't see how. So I remembered that the first night I heard them I saw the footprints they left on the ground. And you told me the kids were an illusion. So I froze the ground and then melted the ice, you know, so the ground would be all mud. And then I could see their footprints. After that it was easy. ORACLE (O.S.) (chuckles) That's clever. You sure you're just fifteen? SUPERGIRL As far as I know. ORACLE (O.S.) You're good. I'm impressed. Tell you what. Get a pen and paper and write down this number. It's my personal number. If there's anything you need, just give me a call, okay. And even if you don't need anything. It gets boring around here sometimes. EXT. CENTENNIAL PARK - MORNING The next day.

44. The citizens of Leesburg stand around the park, waiting for their checkup in a fairly disorganized manner. SUPERGIRL Okay, I want everyone to wait in orderly fashion for your turn. Everyone is going to be checked. I'll personally make sure of that. Now, the line on my right is for a quick checkup, while the line on my left if for a FULL checkup. If you can hear me well, then you belong on my right. If you can't hear me at all, then you should move to the -- Supergirl realizes what she just said. She looks embarrassed. SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) I should've thought of that one better, right? Let's try again. Those who can hear me well raise your hands and say, "Yes, Supergirl, I can hear you." Most of the Crowd raises their hands. CROWD Yes, Supergirl, I can hear you. The Crowd forms a single semi-organized line. The people who didn't raise their hands join that line as well. Supergirl walks toward MRS. FINCH, an old woman who didn't raise her hand. SUPERGIRL Mrs. Finch, can you hear me? Mrs. Finch stares at Supergirl, then points at her ears. SUPERGIRL (CONT'D) Come with me, Mrs. Finch. Supergirl gently takes Mrs. Finch by her arm and leads her to the other line. Mrs. Finch pats Supergirl in the arm and smiles at her. Once Mrs. Finch is at the head of the left line, Supergirl returns and heads for a man who didn't raise his hands before. As she walks, some people break away from the line and pat her in the back. MAN 1 Thank you, Supergirl.

45. WOMAN 1 Yes, you saved us. MAN 2 You're incredible, you know. WOMAN 2 We're all proud of you. MAN 3 We're gonna build you a statue for this. By now, any semblance of organization has vanished and most of the crowd surrounds Supergirl, waiting for their turn to thank her. SUPERGIRL Okay, okay. Stop it right there. Look, I appreciate your appreciation and all that stuff, but we need to have priorities here. First, we have to make sure all of you get a checkup to make sure there are no side effects. Once we've made sure EVERYONE is all right, you can thank me all you want, or you can even bake me a cake or something. The people smile and form a line again. VOICE (O.S.) That's very noble of you. Supergirl turns around to search for the source of the voice. CLARK KENT stands a few yards away from the crowd. CLARK (CONT'D) But by the look of this people, I'm guessing you're going to end up with an awful lot of cake. SUPERGIRL (smiles) That's okay. There're plenty of hospitals and orphanages around. I don't think the kids would mind helping me with the cakes. Some people applaud her response.

46. CLARK By the way, I'm Clark Kent of the Daily Planet. I'm here to interview a young lady that goes by the name of Supergirl. You wouldn't happen to know where I can find her, would you? SUPERGIRL (exited) You're here to interview ME? Really? CLARK Sure. You're front-page news. SUPERGIRL FRONT PAGE? On the Daily Planet? The METROPOLIS Daily Planet? With like a gazillion readers? CLARK It'd better have a gazillion readers because they're paying me a lot of money to get this interview. SUPERGIRL Wow. You're not kidding me? CLARK No, I'm not. Now if we could find a comfortable place where we could chat for a little while... SUPERGIRL Well, we could... (her smile fades) Oh, but I can't right now. I'm kinda busy. I have to make sure everyone -- DOUG PORTER (Fred's partner and future chief of police) and Fred rush to Supergirl. DOUG Oh, no, no. That's enough selflessness out of you, Supergirl. You go have your interview. FRED Yeah, we can handle this. Come on, go have your moment in the sun. Doug and Fred push Supergirl toward Clark.

47. SUPERGIRL (To Doug and Fred) Really, you don't mind? FRED Just go. CROWD Yes, go. Come on, go. SUPERGIRL (fake modesty) Okay. If you insist. Supergirl walks to Clark. FRED Can you believe it? Kids today -- all they think about is helping others and making the world a better place. What's the world coming to? DOUG I fear so much for the future. Supergirl turns to them and smiles. Clark places his hand on her shoulder and leads her away from the Crowd. SUPERGIRL Tell me the truth -- am I really front-page news? CLARK Oh, yes. Everyone is really impressed by how well you handled yourself last night. Clark squeezes Supergirl's shoulder a bit, just so she'd know who he is. Supergirl looks at his hand. She can't believe he can do that to her. Then she looks at him and it downs on her. CLARK (CONT'D) And I do mean everyone. Supergirl smiles with infinite pride. She's walking on clouds right now. FADE OUT. THE END
